As a wedding photographer, some of my brides comment that although they've booked a professional hair stylist, they will be applying their own makeup on their wedding day (or they have a friend who will apply it). It's at this point that I ask if either them or their friend is a professional makeup artist. If the answer is, "No". I then offer my opinion and experience, taking them through a few scenarios to consider should they choose this option. As I have stated before "professional make-up is NOT an option." No matter how "FLAWLESS" you think your skin is, makeup is needed to enhance your beauty because the camera captures everything!
Many of us think we can apply our own makeup beautifully, and while we often do a great job, we can fail to understand that our everyday makeup is very different from what professional makeup artists apply. Professional makeup artists are trained in contouring the face, thus accentuating your best features. They are amazing at reshaping your face using brushes for shadowing and blending, much like an artist does on canvas. They use top quality products giving you perfect coverage that will last all day. This is essential if you are to continue looking your best throughout your entire day, with your lipstick being the only makeup required for touch ups. While all this is very important, a valuable result of having professionally applied makeup on your wedding day will be the results shown in your wedding photos. Trust me on this one!
Bridal makeup is renowned for a soft dewy look, radiating a youthful looking and almost pure complexion. Perfect coverage foundation, contouring and concealing will ensure a flawless looking you, allowing me, your wedding photographer to capture your essence. A professional makeup artist will know what is required to suit wedding photography.
I have several makeup artists on my preferred vendors list, so I chatted with Shakira Middleton of Amplified By Kay and she gave awesome tips to share with all of you!

Tips for the Bride
Always book a professional makeup artist. Someone whose job is to enhance the beauty of others, as well as educate clients on proper skin care. Don't be afraid to ask for their booking site, social media page, or website.
Always do a makeup consultation first. This is the perfect time to discuss concerns regarding the skin, if you have any allergies, as well as the look you're going for on your big day.
Once your makeup consultation has been completed and you've picked your makeup artist, book the artist at least 3 or more months in advance. The worst thing you could do is wait until the last minute and the makeup artist is now booked.
Talk to your bridesmaids about the makeup look you're going for, as well as the artist you've chosen. Sometimes some bridesmaids want to do their own thing, forgetting that it's your day and you have to deal with the bridal/wedding pictures for the rest of your life.
If there's something that you don't like about your makeup or you're not comfortable with, say something. Don't be afraid to let your makeup artist know that you're not satisfied. Remember, you have to look at your bridal/wedding pictures for the rest of your life!
